Project News

What we are planning to do is to appeal for support to the whole local community.  This church has been such an integral part of the village for so long that we feel it's everybody's responsibility, and we trust their wish as well, to see the building preserved. So a brochure is being prepared which will be circulated, with a covering letter, to everyone on the electoral roll, every household in the parish, about 1850, and everyone who may have any contact, however tenuous, past or present, with St Nicolas Church. So we'll be writing to all couples who've been married here, as far back as we can find records, and families of all who have been baptised here.  And I'd be pleased to hear from anyone who can suggest any other people we should contact who might be in a position to give financial support.

But what I'm asking for as well is your assistance in whatever way you may be able to help. We need publicity, we need ideas, we need manpower to think up and organise fund-raising events, not just here in Pevensey but anywhere where they might do some good.

In case my words haven't given a very clear picture of the magnitude of this project, please take a few minutes to look round the church: inside where you can see the effects of the damp; outside, if you have time, see how weather-beaten the fabric is.  And also take a minute to look at the display at the back of the church: this will be updated periodically as the appeal gets under way.  While you're there, please pick up a copy of the appeal brochure (they are only in draft form at the moment), take it home and think of who else you could give one to. There'll be thousands of them available in the next week or so, and I promise you that the finished article will be very appealing.  And please remember that we only have a year to raise that £82,000

Lest we forget what this is all about, think of all those people centuries ago who gave their money, their time, their skills and in some cases even their lives to build this house of God, in which it is our privilege to worship Him.  The least we can do is preserve it as a witness to our faith and to the Glory of God for future generations.

I trust that this appeal will fall on good ground, and bring forth fruit an hundredfold.
